Just as every child must be born from a woman, every child of God must be born from abovethrough the water and Spirit of baptism (John 3:3). The word baptism (baptizein, Gk.) means to wash. When the Church washes a person with water, and repeats aloud the command of our Lord Jesus to baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, that person becomes a newly adopted child in God’s eternal family (Matthew 28:18-20). At the moment of Christian baptism, our sinful separation from God is washed clean. The Holy Spirit plants the seed of faith within us; Christ begins to dwell within us; and, eternal life is promised by the Father. Like our physical birth into life, our spiritual birth into a new life with God is experienced as a passive recipient of an act of the Triune God. (2 Cor 5:17; Gal 6:15; Col 2:12). There is nothing we can do to baptize ourselves. St. Paul explains, It was notbecause of any good deeds that we ourselves have done, but because of his own love that he saved us, through the Holy Spirit, who gives us a new birth and a new life by washing us (Titus 3:5). Christianity is the only religion that has ever offered eternal salvation as an entirely undeserved gift from God. The habit of remembering helps us to daily remember and give thanks to the Trinity for the blessings of our baptismal adoption into God’s eternal family. How often do you focus on Remembering?
