God’s saving work in baptism is not dependent upon our cooperation. Scripture teaches us that both our lives and our salvation are gifts given to us by God alone. There is no more beautiful or powerful statement of salvation than God’s saving action in baptism. Baptism is the Church’s proclamation that we are who we are, not because we decided to believe in God, but because God has chosen us to be in his eternal Kingdom. Christianity is not, and can never be, a do-it-yourself religion. In the same way we are unable to give birth to ourselves, we are also, by ourselves, unable to be born from above as a child of God (John 3:3).
